Scope of Practice

Reports to: Director of Care

Direct Reports: Wellness and Housekeeping Staff

Grandview Retirement Living, is looking for an Assistant Director of Care and Wellness to join our talented team of professionals. Our 159-suites home, located in the heart of Stoney Creek, offers independent and assisted living services. We believe in the power of teamwork to get things done as we continue to find new ways to exceed our residents’ needs and expectation. Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses.
  • Knowledge of the nursing practices and nursing diagnosis.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Effective communication, planning and leadership skills.
  • Willingness to update and keep current their knowledge of changing regulations, practices and procedures, as required by the College of Nurses.
  • Proof of being fully immunized against COVID-19 with the total number of required doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada.

Leadership Skills

  • Supervise care and services provided by the wellness and housekeeping departments.
  • Hands-on leader who empowers others to become the best version of themselves.
  • Monitor staff performance and complete performance appraisals during probation period and annually thereafter.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in the staff development, quality assurance, safety, environment, and infection control programs.
  • Ensure staff involvement in fire and safety procedures and communication to all staff of inspection reports and follow-up actions.
  • Act as the Director of Care in their absence.

Scope of Practice

Health and Wellness Services

  • Assess all resident needs; by recognizing signs and symptoms and, where necessary, initiates remedial health measures.
  • Ensures resident care plans are established and reviewed at least every six months.
  • Responsible to ensure safekeeping of drug and narcotic keys.
  • Order medications from pharmacy as per Doctor's orders. Receive and store medications safely.
  • Complete incident reports when necessary.
  • Supervise resident's personal hygiene and bathing as per schedule or assisting when necessary.
  • Provide emergency medical care.
  • Responsible for administration of medications and treatments as ordered by resident's physician within his/her limitations.
  • Responsible for admission and discharge of residents, including making the appropriate plans for discharge, as necessary.
  • Ensure medical records are maintained.
  • Work closely with General Manager, Director of Care, Attending Physicians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, including, but not limited to, food service and activity/recreation, administration, etc. 
  • Oversee the housekeeping department to ensure adherence to IPAC procedures.
  • Coordinate weekly in-suite cleaning services and daily common areas cleaning.
  • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning and paper supplies.
  • Follow IPAC procedures to create and maintain a healthy and safe environment for residents, families, and staff.
  • Create and update wellness and housekeeping department schedules based on operational needs, i.e., sick calls.

Compliance

  • In conjunction with the Director of Care, ensures IPAC procedures meet and exceeds current regulations.
  • Knowledgeable of the Residential Tenancies Act and Retirement Homes Act 2010.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are reviewed annually.
  • Complete nursing documentation as per College of Nurses Documentation guidelines.
  • Aware of role and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledgeable of and practice residence's fire and safety programs.
  • Participate in Fire Safety and Mock Disasters.
  • Attend departmental and residence staff meetings, in-services, and other necessary training sessions.

People Skills

  • Liaise with staff, residents, resident families, and visitors to establish and maintain positive, courteous relationships.
  • Well-honed communication and presentation skills.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and staff in the development and implementation of activity programs and outside services.
  • Participate in marketing events; take prospective residents and other interested persons on tours of the retirement residence.

Other Requirements

  • This position will be required to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
  • Previous experience in a similar role will be considered an asset.
  • Perform duties as outlined and any other related duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Start Date: Immediately

Salary Range: $50,000 - $55,000 per year

Start Date: Immediate
Shifts: Full-time and part-time days and evenings, including every other weekend
Wage: Starting at $16.00 per hour
